Chairman EUMC's official visit to Australia

The Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, Gen. Håkan Syrén, visited Canberra, Sydney and Perth, upon invitation by the Chief of Defence (CHOD) of the Australian Defence Force, Gen. David Hurley.
During his visit Gen. Syrén met with the CHOD and the Minister of Defence. The discussions and exchange of views focused on the relations between the EU and Australia, security issues of common interest and security challenges in the sea lanes of communication mainly in the Indian Ocean.
In addition the Chairman visited the Fleet Base East in Sydney and HMAS Stirling Naval Base in Perth where he was briefed on Australian maritime capabilities and operations. He also visited the Border Protection Command and the Joint Operations Command in Canberra.
CEUMC also had the opportunity to give lectures to the Centre for Defence and Strategic Studies in Canberra and to The Future Directions International Think Tank in Perth, on the Common Security and Defence Policy of the EU, state of play and Prospects 2012.
