The EU welcomes the agreement between the
President of the Republic of Moldova and the representatives of
Transdniestria and the signature of a Memorandum of Understanding
in Moscow on 8 May, which could provide the basic conditions for
further negotiations. The MoU and a Joint Supplementary Statement
was also signed by the mediating States, Russia and Ukraine, and
the Chairman-in-Office of the OSCE. The EU remains of the opinion
that completion of the process of a regulated withdrawal of the
Russian troops from the region, would be a significant contribution
to the final settlement of the Transdniestrian problem. The EU
strongly hopes that this MoU will prove to be an important step
forward on the way to achieving a permanent and comprehensive
political solution to the Transdniestrian problem within the territory
of Moldova.
The Central and Eastern European countries associated with the European Union, Cyprus, Iceland and Norway align themselves with this declaration.
